One of the options that has been taken out of Exchange 2010 is the Document Access in Outlook Web App (OWA). Though it isn’t heavily used by most of the medium to large companies, it is useful for smaller companies to access files when the staff are out of the office.

Let me explain with screenshots. Below is OWA 2007 and the last link (Documents) is what we are taking about here. This is used to access files on the internal file servers from outside the network, ofcourse depending upon the access configured by the administrator.

But, what about Outlook Web App (OWA) in 2010? There is no Document Access in the new web access interface. You can see it at the screenshot.

OWA Virtual directory still have forms for managing remote server, with allow and block list for servers.
Microsoft state that the feature introduced in Exchange 2007 where by – documents in file shares on the network local to the exchange server can be accessed (read-only) via the documents interface in OWA – is available in 2010.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb430754(EXCHG.140).aspx

However the OWA interface does not include the documents section that 2007 did so despite the EMC having the options to enable and configure this, there does not appear to be any way to access it through the interface…

Microsoft has discontinued this feature, with a view to to use SharePoint. For now…. I hope!

It is my distinct pleasure to announce today the global availability of Exchange Server 2010. This has been an amazing journey from conception to launch, and the team has delivered an unprecedented line up of innovations in this release. I am incredibly proud of the team and our product.

The dedication of the Exchange community working side by side with us to deliver Exchange 2010 has been inspiring for me. I want to thank you for your commitment over the past 3 years helping us develop new ideas, make product enhancements and test pre-release bits to ensure our final product is rock solid. I believe Exchange has the most impressive IT Pro and Developer community in the world today. We could not have shipped this product without you!

In return, I hope you realize the full value of everything Exchange 2010 offers. We are all working in a very challenging economic environment today. Being cost conscious has never been more important – but also helping your organizations differentiate themselves and compete effectively is just as critical. I am delighted to see how Exchange 2010 is helping early adopters accomplish these goals. I want to share just a sampling of their stories, so you can see for yourself.

Organizations are cutting costs and simplifying administration with Exchange 2010.

“Performance with large mailboxes greatly exceeds our expectations. With the growing amount of data that needs to be retained, it is not uncommon for us to have 30-gigabyte plus mailboxes, making these performance improvements crucial to our business. I have been using Exchange 2010 and Outlook 2010 for e-mail since June and have been extremely satisfied with the performance and the user experience. It is a robust, very stable platform. And, we found RBAC to be a huge benefit. That is something I have needed for a long time-to have more granular rights for administrators and lower-level IT staff to do targeted tasks.” – Alexander Diaz, CIO, Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP

“The cost savings from switching from fiber channel to SATA disks is about 70 percent. The I/O system of Exchange Server 2010 is really optimized. If you look at Exchange Server 2007, it’s good; but Exchange Server 2010 is really great. You can significantly reduce the disk costs when you run Exchange Server 2010.” – Thomas Keck, CIO, Elabs

“We’re always moving users around. We’ve been doing that with custom scripts in Exchange Server 2003, but we will definitely be using the Online Move Mailbox feature in 2010. Now we can move them without taking the mailbox offline.” – Allan Tagg, SVP, Global Messaging Exec, Bank of America

Organizations are improving everyday productivity and meeting the expectations of a new generation of workers with Exchange 2010.

“Our salespeople need to respond quickly to dealer concerns. With Exchange Server 2010 and voice-to-text conversion, within 20 seconds after a dealer leaves a voice-mail message, our users see an e-mail preview on their cell phone. Our mobile employees might check voice mail anywhere from 5 to 10 times a day, at 5 to 10 minutes a session. By using Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and taking advantage of the voice-mail preview feature in Exchange Server 2010, they can increase their responsiveness while saving more than 15 minutes a day. From a business perspective, that’s an incredibly valuable productivity increase.” – George Hamin, Director of E-Business and Information Systems, Subaru Canada

“Having Conversation View on the new mobile client is really nice. It provides an extremely fast and efficient means of surveying my inbox and taking needed actions on the go.” – Steven Schafer, Director of Collaboration and Network Services, Global Crossing

“By taking advantage of Outlook Web App, employees can start being productive from new locations almost immediately. As soon as they get their workstation and network connectivity, administrators can quickly provide them with access to e-mail and IM at a moment’s notice without having to manage a lot of logistics. That’s tremendous. Just simplifying the process of giving our remote employees access to e-mail and IM with Exchange Server 2010 will increase the productivity of our IT administrators by at least 20 to 30 percent.” – Dan Evans, Manager of Messaging and Collaboration, Morgan Keegan & Company

Organizations of all sizes are better managing risk and the cost of compliance with Exchange 2010.

“With Exchange Server 2010, we can give the auditors permission to pull mail out of mailboxes themselves, rather than having me pull the data and ship it to them in a PST file. Now the nine hours a month I spend on compliance will be cut down to zero. Getting rid of PST files using Exchange Server 2010 solves a whole series of nightmares that I’m sure every Exchange Server administrator has had” – Andrew McNair, Wintel Infrastructure Manager, Cell C

“By using the compliance features in Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, we can save about $400,000 in hardware and software costs. That’s a big savings.” – Joseph Nguyen, Systems Architect at a large U.S. university.

“With Exchange Server 2010, we can set up transport protection rules for things like social security numbers to comply with HIPAA and for voice mails to ensure that they can’t be forwarded outside the company.” – Thomas Dechmann, Senior Principal IT Technologist, Medtronic

I’m also particularly proud of the work the team has done delivering Exchange as a server and a service. This has been an incredible engineering endeavor that no one else in the industry comes close to delivering. Today, we’ve successfully scaled Exchange 2010 to more than 15 million Outlook Live accounts around the world and, moving forward, to millions more with Exchange Online. Our promise to deliver a seamless Exchange experience on premises with the server, in the cloud as a service or a combination of the two truly gives customers choice and peace of mind.

You can see more customer results from the case studies published today, read about the launch in press coverage, hear from MBD President Stephen Elop in his TechEd Europe keynote launching Exchange 2010 and this evening at the Exchange Connections conference in Las Vegas in my keynote.

I know many of you are already underway with your Exchange 2010 deployments and many more will be starting today. The Exchange Server 2010 bits are available for download now. As always, keep the feedback coming. Listening to customers and partners is how the team has made Exchange the premier e-mail solution across the globe and that’s the way we intend to keep it.

Thank you!

We always talk about listening to customers and sometimes this is written off by many as ‘marketing speak’. In fact, we do take feedback seriously and no input is more important to our engineering processes than your voice.

Earlier this year we made a decision in one direction, and due to the feedback we have received on this blog and elsewhere, we have reconsidered. In the coming calendar year we will issue an update for Exchange 2007 enabling full support of Windows Server 2008 R2. We heard from many customers that this was important for streamlining their operations and reducing administrative challenges, so we have changed course and will add R2 support. We are still working through the specifics and will let you know once we have more to share on the timing of this update.

So, keep the feedback coming. We are listening.

The Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer provides a streamlined method to identify missing security updates and common security misconfigurations. MBSA 2.1.1 is a minor upgrade to add support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

To easily assess the security state of machines in an environment, Microsoft offers the free Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) scan tool. MBSA includes a graphical and command line interface that can perform local or remote scans of Microsoft Windows systems.

MBSA 2.1.1 builds on previous versions by adding support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. As with the previous MBSA 2.1 release, MBSA includes 64-bit installation, security update and vulnerability assessment (VA) checks, improved SQL Server 2005 checks, and support for the latest Windows Update Agent (WUA) and Microsoft Update technologies. More information on the capabilities of MBSA 2.1 and 2.1.1 is available on the MBSA Web site.

MBSA 2.1.1 runs on Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP and Windows 2000 systems and will scan for missing security updates, rollups and service packs using Microsoft Update technologies. MBSA will also scan for common security misconfigurations (also called Vulnerability Assessment checks) using a known list of less secure settings and configurations for all versions of Windows, Internet Information Server (IIS) 5.0, 6.0 and 6.1, SQL Server 2000 and 2005, Internet Explorer (IE) 5.01 and later, and Office 2000, 2002 and 2003 only.

To assess missing security updates, MBSA will only scan for missing security updates, update rollups and service packs available from Microsoft Update. MBSA will not scan or report missing non-security updates, tools or drivers.
Choose the appropriate download below for English (EN), German (DE), French (FR) and Japanese (JA) for x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) platforms.

Service Pack 2 for Exchange 2007 has been released today!

This marks an important milestone in the development process for Exchange Server 2007. Our team has provided a couple of blog posts here and here outlining what is available in this service pack release. During this week, we will feature a series of posts to add additional information which will hopefully assist in answering questions you may have on SP2.

As we mentioned previously, there are many important updates to Exchange 2007 in this service pack including:

Enhanced Auditing – New Exchange auditing events and audit log repository enable Exchange administrators to more easily audit the activities occurring on their Exchange servers. It allows the right balance of granularity, performance, and easy access to audited events via a dedicated audit log repository. This simplifies the auditing process and makes review of audited events easier by segregating audited events in a dedicated location.

Exchange Volume Snapshot Backup Functionality – A new backup plug-in has been added to the product that will enable customers to create Exchange backups when a backup is invoked through the Windows Server 2008 Backup tool. Exchange Server 2007 didn’t have this capability on Windows Server 2008 and additional solutions were required to perform this task.

Dynamic Active Directory Schema Update and Validation – The dynamic AD schema update and validation feature allows for future schema updates to be dynamic deployed as well as proactively preventing conflicts whenever a new property is added to the AD schema. Once this capability is deployed it will enable easier management of future schema updates and will prevent support issues when adding properties that don’t exist in the AD schema.

Public Folder Quota Management – SP2 enables a consistent way to manage quotas by improving the current PowerShell cmdlets to perform quota management tasks.

Centralized Organizational Settings – SP2 introduces new PowerShell option that enable centralized management of many of the Exchange organization settings.

Named Properties cmdlets – SP2 enables Exchange administrators to monitor their named property usage per database.

New User Interface for Managing Diagnostic Logging- SP2 enables Exchange administrators to easily configure and manage diagnostic logging from within the Exchange Management Console.

Sources tell me that Microsoft will release Exchange 2010 Release Candidate 1 for public download this week!

So get your labs ready with Windows 2008 R2 to start testing out the next generation of the world’s most popular e-mail servers.

Exchange 2010 will help organizations reduce costs, protect communications and delight e-mail users with capabilities to do the following:

Lower costs with more flexible deployment and management options. Exchange 2010 provides organizations with the same enterprise-grade capabilities whether deployed on-premises or as a service from Microsoft or partners — or as a mix of both. Further, for customers deploying the server, the new release simplifies the way organizations provide always-on communications and disaster recovery, meaning administrators spend less time managing their e-mail system. Exchange 2010 further improves performance running on lower-cost direct-attached storage, enabling organizations to dramatically reduce storage costs by up to 85 percent without sacrificing performance or reliability.

Protect information and meet compliance requirements with the new e-mail archive. As e-mail volume grows, companies must address increasing compliance, legal and e-discovery concerns, but today, according to Osterman Research, only 28 percent of organizations currently archive their e-mail content (Osterman Research, 2008). Exchange 2010 introduces an integrated e-mail archive. The new solution makes it easier to store and query e-mail across the organization using the Exchange software that organizations already know and use.

Improve user productivity with the ultimate inbox experience. Basex Inc. recently estimated that the average number of corporate e-mail messages received per person per day is expected to reach more than 93 by 2010. In addition, businesses lose $650 billion annually in productivity due to unnecessary interruptions including those from e-mail (Basex, 2008). Exchange 2010, together with Microsoft Outlook 2010, will give people more control over their communications with features such as these:

-MailTips. Warn users before they commit an e-mail faux pas such as sending mail to large distribution groups, to recipients who are out of the office or to recipients outside the organization, helping protect against information leaks and reduce unnecessary e-mail messages.

-Voice Mail Preview. See text previews of voice mail directly in Outlook.

-Ignore Conversation. This e-mail “mute button” allows people to remove themselves from an irrelevant e-mail string, reducing unwanted e-mail and runaway reply-all threads.

-Conversation View. Combine related e-mail messages in a single conversation to reduce inbox clutter.

-Call Answering Rules. Create customized “Press 1 for …” call-routing menus with Exchange voice mail.

-Consistent Experience. Use Outlook on the PC, a mobile phone or a browser for the same experience with enhancements in Outlook Mobile and Outlook Web Access.

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 is the industry’s leading server for e-mail, calendaring and unified messaging. Exchange Server 2007 is the foundation for a dynamic and holistic unified communications experience, and has been designed to meet the challenges and address the messaging needs of today’s businesses. Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2) enables customers to increase their operational efficiency and it sets the foundation for the transition to Exchange Server 2010, which is expected to be available in the second half of 2009. A public beta of Exchange Server 2010 is available for download at http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/2010 .

Customer Benefits
Key new features of Exchange Server 2007 SP2 unveiled today include:

Enhanced Auditing – New Exchange auditing events and audit log repository enable Exchange administrators to more easily audit the activities occurring on their Exchange servers. It allows the right balance of granularity, performance, and easy access to audited events via a dedicated audit log repository. This simplifies the auditing process and makes review of audited events easier by segregating audited events in a dedicated location.

Exchange Volume Snapshot Backup Functionality - A new backup plug-in has been added to the product that will enable customers to create Exchange backups when a backup is invoked through the Windows Server 2008 Backup tool.

New User Interface for Managing Diagnostic Logging – SP2 enables Exchange administrators to easily configure and manage diagnostic logging from within the Exchange Management Console.

Pricing and Availability

SP2 is available at no additional cost to customers that have purchased Exchange Server 2007. SP2 is slated for release in the third quarter of 2009. More information on Exchange Server 2007 SP2 will be available on the Exchange Server Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/exchange on the release date.

Source: http://www.buit.org/2009/02/10/e-mail-archive-in-the-cloud-goodbye-pst-files/

We email each other a lot nowadays. I spend a significant amount of time behind my Outlook client everyday. Reading and writing emails. I especially like all the “FYI” (For Your Interest) mails. Usually they are very interesting but there is no direct action required. So, you need to save this email for awhile. Your inbox grows rapidly this way and online email providers understand this. They give you a 7 Gb mailbox or more!

But your company IT department is less generous. You’ve got a 100Mb mailbox within your organisation. This means you’ll have to clean your mailbox every week at least and because you want to save a lot of mail you create your first offline archive, a PST file. A PST file will always result in loss of data. During every migration or system failure someone forgets to backup it’s PST files and has lost all his communication of the past years.

Until your IT department wakes up and puts the whole mail service in the cloud, you can use a good alternative. Put your whole email archive within a Gmail mailbox!

Some simple steps:

1. Open a new Gmail account
2. Within Gmail, go to Settings, Forwarding and POP/IMAP and enable IMAP
3. Configure your emailclient to connect with the Gmail mailbox (http://mail.google.com/support/bin/topic.py?topic=12913 )
4. Drag and drop all the folders and mail items from your mail archive (PST file) to the Gmail mailbox (this took me a while)
5. Remove the Offline Archive and your done!

From now on drag all the emails you want to keep to the Gmail mailbox and it’s always available. You can even search your archive from an internet café, simply by going to gmail.com and logging in with your credentials.

The mail items within Outlook are also offline available and Windows Vista or 7 automatically indexes them!

Exchange 2007 has continued to improve upon its Anti Spam features with each version of the product. In this article I want to focus on installing and configuring the antispam agent on a hub transport server.

By default the agents are not installed on the hub role since this server is intended to be a down stream server behind an Exchange Edge Server. Throughout the article you will see that some features can be manged via EMC and a number of features must be managed via EMS.

Installing Anti Spam Agents
By default the Anti Spam agents are not installed on the hub servers ***these must be installed on each hub that you want to utilze the agents ****

Open EMC
Organizational Configuration
Select the Hub Transport Server

As you can see there is no reference to the anti spam agents

Lets go ahead and install the Agents"

1. Open EMS
2. you can change to the directory or input the path to the powershell script (I chose to change to the directory) Change to C:\progroam files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Scripts (assuming install directory is default)
3. ./install-AntiSpamAgents.ps1

After the agents are installed the Transport Service needs to be restarted

Lets go back to EMC–Organizational Configuration — Hub Transport

We now have an Anti Spam Tab with a number of items to configure

CONFIGURATION:
Now that we have installed our Anti Spam Agents lets take a look at what we can configure. Some configuration can only be done from EMS and some can be done from both EMS and EMC.
Content Filtering
IP Allow List
IP Allow List Providers
IP Block List
IP Block List Providers
Recpient Filtering
Sender Filtering
Sender ID
Sender Reputation

Content Filtering :
When the Content Filter agent is enabled on a computer, the Content Filter agent filters all messages that come through all Receive connectors on that computer. Only messages that come from external sources are filtered. External sources are defined as non-authenticated sources that are considered anonymous Internet sources.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124739.aspx

Content filter provides us with 3 tabs that we can configure
1. Custom Words
2. Exceptions
3. Action

Lets first set a custom message to the users when a message is filtered, to do this you use the the set-contentfilterconfig command
Set-Contentfilterconfig -rejectionresponse "Your message was rejected due to content it contained"

Custom Words
This options allows us to configure 2 options 1: Messages with certain words will not be blocked and 2. Messages containing works or phrases to block.

Lets perform some Tests:
1. Add a word to by pass our content filter
2. Add a word/phrase to block the message

I have created 2 new rules:
1. b ypass will exempt a message from being filtered
2. baseball or "my dog has fleas " will be blocked

Since Content filter is only done for remote domains I setup a 2nd Exchange Org remote.local for the my tests.

Test:
Send Message From External.User@remote.local to Brian.Tirch@Vm.local with Baseball to catch the message

Result:
The Sender External.User@remote.local receives Error message stating message is restricted, we can see our custom error message towards the bottom of the message.

Test2: Send Messge From External.User@remote.local to Brian.Tirch@vm.local with bypass to bypass the content filter

Result: Message was receieved by Brian

Exceptions
We have the ability to let users or groups by pass the content filter, this would be good for help desk mailboxes etc……

I have added Brian.Tirch@vm.local to the Exepctions

Test: Send message from External.User@remote.local with baseball to Brian.tirch@vm.local

Result: The message was delivered and bypassed our content filter blocking the word b aseball

Action:
The Action tab alllows use to set thresholds to 1. Reject 2. Delete or 3. quarantine messag es

For this test I have set all message with SCL rating of 2 to be quarantined and Brian.Tirch@vm.local receive a copy.

Test:
1. Removed Brian from the Exception
2. Sent message from External.User@remote.local with spam like content

Result:
Message was captured by the content filter and a Quarantined version was sent to our spam mailbox.
I then released the message from our spam mailbox to the recipient which was delivered.

** To release a messsage from the spam mailbox you open the message and click send again **

IP Allow List
IP Allow lists are not configurable at the Org level, this is a server level setting and we must look under server configuration -> Hub transport to be able to configure this via EMC.

Lets use the Get-IPAllowListConfig to see what our default configuration is.

We can see that by default only filtering of external domains is enabled, however this feature can be configured for internal and(or) exteranl filtering.

To add a single IP or range of IP’s we would use Add-IPAllowListEntry command
Add-IPAllowListEntry -IPAddress 1.1.1.1

Any address or range added to your filter be bypass the content filter that you have enabled. This would be good for any remote system or new groups that are trusted or any smtp relays that are trusted.

After we have added the IP/Range we want to allow we can use the Get-IPAllowListEntry to view our configured systems.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123554.aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124385.aspx

IP Allow List Providers
IP Allow list provider aka Save List Services can be manged via EMS or EMC

Lets look at the properties of the IP Allow List Providers

Click Add

Provider name :Type the name of the IP Block List provider service. This name is for your own use
Lookup domain : type the domain name that the Connection Filter agent queries for updated IP Block list information.

Match to any return code When you select this option, the Connection Filter agent treats any IP Address status code that is returned by the IP Block List provider service as a match.
Match to the following mask When you select this option, the Connection Filter agent acts only on messages that match the return status code of 127.0.0.x, where the integer x is any one of the following values:
1 The IP address is on an IP Block list.
2 The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server is configured to act as an open relay.
4 The IP address supports a dial-up IP address.
Match to any of the following responses When you select this option, the Connection Filter agent acts only on messages that match the same IP address status code that is returned by the IP Block List provider service.

IP Block List
IP Block Lists are the opposite of our allow lists, there are IP that we want to block from sending messages to our Exchange environment. IP block lists are not configurable at the Org level, this is a server level setting and we must look under server configuration -> Hub transport to be able to configure this via EMC.

We can use the Get-IPBlockListConfig to view our current

To modify our configuration we need to utlize the Set-IPBlockListConfig
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123578.aspx

Lets create a custom response message for a blocked server:
[PS] C:\>Set-IPBlockListConfig -StaticEntryRejectionResponse "Your machine has been identified as malicious and all messages will be rejected from your server".

Now lets add the IP address of our remote mail server to our block list:
Add-IpblockListEntry -IpAddress 192.168.1.120

Test:
Send a message from External.User@remote.local to Brian.tirch@vm.local

Result:
The Sender received an NDR with our custom message stating the server has been blocked

We can see that our message was reject by our content filter and our custom message was displayed.

IP Block List Providers

IP Block List Providers like Spam Haus http://www.spamhaus.org/index.lasso have been around for a number of years and have compiled a list of known spamers and can greatly assist Exchange Administrators by using thier compiled list instead of manually blocking IP’s.

The agent can be managed from both EMS and EMC
On the properties of the agent we see the following

Let configure our server to use Spam haus as an Block List Provider

Select the Providers Tab and Click Add

you can test to see if the SBL blocking is working by sending an email (any email) to: nelson-sbl-test@crynwr.com (you must send the email from the mail server which you wish to test). The Crynwr system robot will answer you to tell you if your server is correctly blocking SBL-listed addresses or not.

We can also configure Exceptions so that email sent TO a user are not blocked even if they are found to be from someone on the Block List.

Recipient Filtering
Recipient Filtering allow the system to reject messages of users that are not in your address book or you can block recipients that should not be receiving mail from the outside.

Lets look at our settings
1. check the box to block messages to recipients not listed in the GAL
2. We can block messages to specific users or groups

Test1:
I am going to add Brian.Tirch@vm.local as a blocked users, then send a message from External.User@remote.local

Result:

For more information on Recipient Filtering review the following
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998898.aspx

Sender Filtering
Sender filtering compares the sender on the MAIL FROM: SMTP command to an administrator-defined list of senders or sender domains that are prohibited from sending messages to the organization to determine what action, if any, to take on an inbound message.

Sender Filtering can be managed via EMC or EMS, lets look at the settings we have available

You can see we have 3 tabs
1. General – provides a description of what sender filtering does
2. Blocked Senders – allow us to block users, domains, or messages with blank sender fields
3. Action – allows the message to be rejected or stamped with blocked sender

Lets configure some settings
1.Add External.User@remote.local as a blocked user and set the action to reject

Test:
Send a message from External.User@remote.local to Brian.Tirch@vm.local

Result:
The sender receives and NDR #554 5.1.0 Sender denied ##

Now we have remove the individual user from the block list and added the entire domain, for this test we will still leave the action to block.

Test2:
send a message from External.User@remote.local to Brian.Tirch@vm.local

Result:
The sender receives and NDR #554 5.1.0 Sender denied ##

I have left the domain block in place however this time changed the actions to stamp

Test3
send a message from External.User@remote.local to Brian.Tirch@vm.local

Result:
Message was received by Brian.Tirch@vm.local ….

"Stamp message with blocked sender and continue processing If you select this option, messages from a sender or domain that is on the Blocked Senders list are stamped with the blocked status and continue to process. This message metadata is evaluated by the Content Filter agent when a spam confidence level (SCL) is calculated. Additionally, sender reputation uses the message metadata when it calculates a sender reputation level (SRL) for the sender of the message." http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997235.asp x

Sender ID
"The Sender ID Framework is an e-mail authentication technology protocol that helps address the problem of spoofing and phishing by verifying the domain name from which e-mail messages are sent.
Lets take a look at what options we have

We have 2 tabs, general and actions

We have 3 tabs General, Sender Confidence, and Action

The Sender Confidence tab allow us to perform an open proxy test

The actions tab allows us to set a threshold for our SRL

The last item I want to mention is how to set the SCL Junk threshold
SCL Junk E-mail folder threshold
If the SCL value for a specific message exceeds the SCL Junk E-mail folder threshold, the Mailbox server puts the message in the Outlook user’s Junk E-mail folder. If the SCL value for a message is lower than the SCL delete, reject, quarantine, and Junk E-mail folder threshold values, the Mailbox server puts the message in the user’s Inbox.

use the Get-OrganizationalConfig command to display the current settings

we can see our current value is set to 8, let change this to 2 and generate a message that will exceed this value.
C:\>Set-OrganizationConfig -SCLJunkThreshold 2

Lets send a message from External.User@remote.local to brian.tirch@vm.local and simulate a junk message.

If we look at the message header we can see the SCL was 4 which exceeded our SCL threshold of 2 and sent the message to junk

The Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 management pack is designed to be used for monitoring Exchange 2007 events, collecting Exchange component-specific performance counters in one central location, and for raising alerts for operator intervention as necessary. By detecting, sending alerts, and automatically responding to critical events, this management pack helps indicate, correct, and prevent possible service outages or configuration problems, allowing you to proactively manage Exchange servers and identify issues before they become critical. The management pack monitors and provides alerts for automatic notification of events indicating service outages, performance degradation, health monitoring, and centralized management.

This Management Pack requires Operations Manager 2007 Service Pack 1.

What will this mean for Windows Mobile?

Live reporting from Engadget at Apple Press conference:

I’m really excited to be the one to talk to you abut iPhone in the enterprise. We’ve had some great customers at the forefront wanting to adopt the iPhone into their enterprises.” Talking about using Genentech using a fleet of iPhones. “We have a lot of great university customers.” Stanford, for example; hundreds of iPhones for faculty and staff.“There are a lot of things enterprise customers have told us that have hold us back from being HUGE in the enterprise. What do they want to take the iPhone into the enterprise. What do they want? Push email — huge request. They want great calendar integration. They want it pushed to them wherever they are.

10:05AM – They want push contacts, global address list, Cisco IPsec VPN, they want authentication and certs, enterprise class WiFi (WPA2 / 802.1x), security policies, enterprise configuration tools, and they want remote wipe.

“That’s a long list of important features enterprise customers want. Well, I’m excited to be the one to tell you today, we’re doing ALL these things in the next release of the iPhone software.”

“Microsoft has come up with a much more advanced architecture, where the iPhone can work directly with the Exchange server in a more reliable and affordable way. We’re building Exchange support so you get push email, push calendaring, push contacts, global address lists, and the ability to remote wipe it.”

“The same email app, calendar app, and contact apps that customers really love will get information directly from the Exchange server.” So no new apps on the iPhone for using Exchange.

Continue at source!

NOW there is an official MS press release too!

Q&A: Microsoft Helps Connect Apple iPhone Users to Microsoft’s Exchange Server

Terry Myerson, corporate vice president for Exchange, talks to PressPass about the importance of the new agreement between Microsoft and Apple to offer built-in support for Exchange on the iPhone, and the increasing popularity of Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 among mobile professionals.
